My family tree can be traced through the Land Between the Lakes and the Shawnee National Forest regions of West Kentucky and Southern Illinois. I have been obsessed with traveling the Nation's National and State Parks my entire life.

Rugged from the Signal Point parking lot to the main bridge, then up to Edwards Point but amazing views along the Tennesee River Gorge, combined with some great creek and waterfall time along the way.

A hidden 2.6-mile loop near Smithland with jaw-dropping views! The star is the 188-ft sandstone arch, the largest east of the Mississippi, plus cool rock formations and a serene creek. The area has rich history as a Trail of Tears site—interpretive signs add additional depth to the experience. Perfect for a quiet hike with wildflowers and rare plants. Open year-round, free entry! Key Tips for Visiting: • Wear Sturdy Shoes: Rocky and muddy patches, especially after rain, make hiking boots a must. Trekking poles help on slippery slopes. • Go Counter-Clockwise: Start left at the trail split for a gentler warm-up and save the arch for a grand finale. • No Dogs Allowed: Leave pets at home to protect the preserve’s fragile ecosystem. • Check Trail Conditions: Mud and fallen leaves can obscure paths; use AllTrails or follow green markers. • Bring Water & Snacks: No facilities nearby, so pack essentials for the 1-hour hike. • Respect History: Stay on trails to preserve the Trail of Tears site and avoid climbing on the arch. • Visit in Spring: Wildflowers like June grass and prickly pear cactus (yes, prickly pear cavtus in the southern US) bloom vibrantly. -There ate poison ivy, ticks and (possibly) venomous snakes off trail, so make sure to stay on trail.

Key Tips for Visiting: • Go Early: Arrive at sunrise to beat crowds and see more wildlife. Loop road gets packed by mid-morning. • Bike or Walk: The loop is car-free on Wednesdays (May-Sept), so rent a bike or hike for a quieter experience. • Bring Binoculars: Great for spotting bears and deer from a safe distance. • Pack Snacks & Water: No food services in the cove; the campground store has limited supplies. • Check Weather: Fog and rain can slow the drive, so bring layers and check forecasts. • Trail Prep: Abrams Falls (5 miles round-trip) is moderate; wear sturdy shoes and expect muddy spots. • Respect Wildlife: Keep 50 yards from bears and deer—no feeding or approaching! • Plan Time: The loop takes 2-4 hours by car due to stops and traffic; allow extra for hiking or photos.

Weather was perfect and we arrived during low tide. It was crowded so be patient scrambling the rocks as they are slick and you could easily fall into the cold 50 degree Atlantic Ocean. This place lives up to the hype and is worth a stop on any trip to MDI.

This is a great partner hike if you're exploring outside of Louisville, the rolling hills and cobblestone creek beds make for a scenic drive to and from the trail head.

Its cool to get to see all the history, then take a great swim at this smaller beach. I guess a photography excursion is worth it, but come here for the beach.

This hike is worth the effort and is a right of passage of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I have visited it in all seasons.

great views as you get deeper into the Smoky Mountains. Most people take this road through or out of the park area.

Great way to break up the Cheyenne to Yellowstone road trip. The Mountains are some of the most beautiful I have seen in the Rockies.

I explored with the wild cave trip under candlelight. Pretty awesome, but a few tight squeezes and you will get dirty and it takes most of the day. All worth it.

Cool experience if you're not headed to Yellowstone or Glacier.

Get out of the vast grassland and take a tour to mix up your trip to the Black Hills. I just took a quick basic tour due to time constraints.

Grand Junction is one of the last larger areas with amenities prior to reaching the 4 corners region of Colorado. Only small towns after this.
