Bear Canyon Lake, Arizona
Payson, Arizona
Description
Added by Billy Cartee
This adventure is great because of the accessibility and ability to plan on a moments notice for a great weekend in the mountains. The camping area provides gorgeous scenic views, no permits/reservations required...So its FREE. Camping grounds have access to Bear Canyon lake where you can fish for rainbow trout, kayak or even boat (electric engines only).
Located at the Mogollon Rim, Bear Canyon Lake only adds to the beauty of the area. The drive along Rim Road is breath-taking as it is about 7600 ft elevation and displays many look out points for great photo opportunities. Bear Canyon Lake is a remote camping area that is spaced out to experience a more undeveloped and obscure camping experience.
From Payson. Take Highway 260 northeast. Near Mile Post 291, travel west on Forest Road 300 (Rim Road) for about 12 miles. FR 300 is paved for about 3 miles to the Woods Canyon Lake turnoff where it turns to gravel. Take Forest Road 89 north for about 2 miles, then turn right onto Forest Road 89A to one of the two lake access points.
OR
From Rim Road and the S.R. 260 head west on Rim Road and travel for 13 miles to F.R. 89 then head north for 2.5 miles to the campground entrance.
