I'm a retired Yukon-Alaska tour driver/guide who continues to travel extensively as a writer and photographer. My wife and I travel mostly by RV and cruise ship, while I'm an avid solo wilderness hiker.

As impressive as the canyon is from the summer trails, the view from the frozen river is mind-boggling.

The ice road from Inuvik to to Aklavik is 116 kilometers / 72 miles long one way, and driving it after the severe cold of mid-winter has past is a fascinating way to spend a day.

There's lots of parking, there are outhouses, and the views from the top of the highest dune are wonderful. At the top on a windy day, you can see that this is an active dune system, and the forest to the east is being buried by the blowing sand.

If you are a fan of aviation and/or history, this trail gets 5 stars - if you're not a fan of either it probably rates 3 stars. The trail is rugged, moderately challenging, with ropes to assist in particularly steep sections. The disrespect shown to this memorial site by people tagging the aircraft is extremely disappointing to see.
