The Soca river is regularly included as one of the top white water destinations in Europe.Only a 2 hour drive from Venice International AirportSuitable for all levels, with rapids ranging from I - V, the Katarakt section is infamously tough going.Ridiculously beautiful backdrop of the Julian alps.Lots of great hostels, campsites and wild spaces to bed down.

The best way to get to the river is to fly or otherwise arrive at Venice then make the journey by train or car up through the plains of Emilia Romagna into the foothills of the Alps and across the border. Slovenia is impossibly pretty.

There are numerous little towns along the river. Trnovo ob Soci, Kobarid and Srepenica have the best selection of equipment rental and guide hire shops. Also most of the guesthouses, hostels and campsites are around here.

The river starts out very gently with some rocky grade I's and II's. Near the Srepenica put it in rapidly steps up to III's and in high water IV's. Past the Trnovo put in, the Katarakt section is a solid grade V, and shouldn't be attempted by anyone less than expert. Don't be another tourist horror story.

The rapids are fast and quick. The water is a mesmerising clear turquoise and completely drinkable.

Around the river you can also check out the highest waterfall in Slovenia, the Mt Triglav national park and even take a day trip to Lake Bled.
