Backpack from the Iron creek Trailhead to Redfish Lake (shuttle Loop)

Stanley, Idaho

Description

Added by Brad Pearson

2 nights back packing in the Sawtooth wilderness areaTons of stars, cliffs, fish, lakes, and water fallsApproximately 16 miles total with the final stretch passing through the middle of the to tallest peaks in the SawtoothsElevation Gain: 4000 feet

Park one of your cars at redfish lake backpack parking lot, then shuttle 5 miles with another car north to Stanley Idaho. Turn left onto high way twenty one and proceed about 3 miles west. From here you will see Iron Creek Trailhead and campground turn out on your left (It a has a road sign). Iron creek road is dirt road that you will follow all the way to the trail head. From the trail head you will proceed south about a mile and a half with little elavation gain until you reach a small meadow on your left. There is a signed junction here for alphine and sawtooth lakes but you will want to stick left and cross the stream. There will be a small log crossing at the beginning of the opening. Cross the logs and follow that trail for nearly 4 miles until you get to goat creek falls. This part seems a little strange becuase the trail seems to go back north where you came from . But stick with the trail and it wrap back south andl becomes very steep you will go up about 600 feet and then it will flatten out until right before goat creek falls .The trail disappears at that point so just follow the falls up until you reach goat lake. This part is very steep and there no trail , you ascend next to the water fall until you reach goat lake which is located just above 8000 feet.

Stay one night at goat lake, the next morning go around the lake and up the snow field at the far end of the lake. It will take some time navigating up the snow feilds but by the end of it you will gain nearly another 1000 feet of elavtion. At the top you will be forced into a hanging valley with lots of smaller lakes. Go to the furthest lake and camp there in the basin below Thompson Peak (it will be clear which peak it is since it is the biggest). climb the Rock field below the pass about 700 feet until you reach the pass below Thompson peak and williams peak. You can now look down left from about 10,000 feet and see redfish lake (7 miles) and Thompson lake (2 miles) to your east. Navigating down the pass can be slow and dangerous be careful. There is no official trail from this pass back to redfish from Thompson lake, but if you stick to the left side as you descend you will meet up with a small trail that runs into a big trail that take you to a different lake (Marshal lake trail) . Keep right on the Big Trail in the direction of redfish lake you will run straight into the back packing parking lot at redfish.
