If you are ever passing through Flagstaff, Az and have a day for an adventure, climb Humphrey's Peak trail to reach the highest point in Arizona! This moderate hike starts with peaceful switchbacks through the forest and leads you to many false summits, giving you different views and perspectives all over the state. Reaching the top is worth it all!

The 9.5 mile moderate, out and back trail is one of those hikes that the view reaching an elevation of 12,635' says it all. It answers the why's we ask ourselves the whole way up. Humphrey's peak is located in the Kachina Peaks Wilderness in Coconino National Forest, 11 miles north of Flagstaff. The elevation increases 3,313' and once you are above the tree line the climate and wind changes drastically, so you want to be prepared. I would recommend bringing a wind breaker and/or hat. And start early! Depending on your stops and conditioning it can take anywhere from 6-8hours.

To reach the trailhead, you drive up a paved road and it is north of the lower parking lot of SnowBowl -a popular winter ski resort. From the parking lot it is actually 11 miles because there is a short trail up the hill to take you to the forest to begin your climb. The hike begins with a peaceful field of wildflowers, to steep switchbacks through the alpine, to eventually climbing up rocks where the wind was about 50-70mph. When you are above the tree line , you are about 2/3 to the top. So close, yet so far!! There are three false summits that give you false hope, but breathtaking views from every direction. The wind, the cold, and walking on rocks make it difficult, but don't give up because soon enough you will make it there. Keep on trucking until you see the sign! On a clear day the view stretches out 60 miles. If you're luck you are able to see the Grand Canyon! We didn't, but once you've reached the top you feel so accomplished and every side you look at is magnificent.

Just like any hike down a mountain, the climb down goes by with a blink of an eye. By this time we didn't even feel our legs, but they got us down.

If you are camping before and/or after the hike, I would strongly recommend Canyon Vista Campground! Located on Lake Mary Rd, Flagstaff This inexpensive campground has bathrooms, drinking water, and very friendly hosts on site. You get to set up camp in a spacious area under cozy pine street trees, looking at Mt. Humphreys. This site is only about a half hour from the trail, and is a good spot when you find closer campgrounds all full.
