Description

Added by Kristen Bor

This campsite is located at mile 17.1 of the John Muir Trail.

Make the .75 miles detour off of the John Muir Trail to reach this spot and you won't regret it. Lower Cathedral Lake is typically less populated than nearby Upper Lake and has some of the mot beautiful scenery on the JMT. Sunrise and sunset with the reflection of Cathedral Peak on the glassy water is the best way to end and begin your day on the trail. Bonus: head to the west side of the lake for views of Tenaya Lake and the valley below.

John Muir Trail: Camping at Lower Cathedral Lake Reviews

The view from up top is like something out of a fairy tale it's just amazing. The hike isn't too bad only 7 miles round trip and it's through Forrest which means the view is nice the whole way. But if you decide to take this hike make sure to bring a very good mosquito repellent and if possible a mosquito net for your face. since its swampy at points there are hundreds of mosquitoes They will literally eat you alive I got like over 30 bites.
