Kayak on Shem Creek, South Carolina

Amherst, Virginia

Description

Added by Rachelle Martin

This is an awesome kayaking area with tons of wildlife and beautiful scenery. Great  for beginners and families.

This is a bit of a touristy spot but for good reason! It's beautiful, has lots of wildlife, reasonable prices, and has restaurants and shops for afterwards. I am a brand new to kayaking myself and I couldn't have picked a better area to start out. It was a hot, humid day in June and perfect weather for being out on the water. Our group went through Nature Adventure Outfitters. It was $24 per person for a tandem kayak for up to 4 hours! The company also rents out canoes and paddle boards. The guides had great tips on where to go. After just minutes of being out on the water, we had already seen a few dolphin up close. One of my favorite parts from the trip that I wasn't expecting was the bird watching. After kayaking, it was great to relax at one of the many restaurants surrounding the area. One thing before you go out is to definitely check the weather. The storms roll in pretty fast in that area. We were out on the water with clear skies and after 10 minutes of being back a huge thunderstorm came through. It was a ton of fun. If I were to do it again, I'd make a day of it and take a tour of Bulls Island.
