Lake Dauben Loop

Lake Dauben (Daubensee in German) is located on Gemmi Pass, an ancient high mountain pass that has been walked since the Middle Ages – even Sherlock Holmes walks this route in "The Final Problem"! The lake has a subsurface runoff and drains completely in late autumn, but the trip can also be done in winter.

Start by taking the cableway from Leukerbad to Gemmi Pass, where you will have amazing views of the Swiss Alps and the village of Leukerbad. The mountain station (2350 m/7710 ft) is located higher than Lake Dauben (2200 m/7215 ft), so you will descend to get to the lake.

You can then choose between multiple routes around the lake, all of which are well maintained and marked. There are many good spots to rest, as well – be sure to enjoy the incredible silence as you sit in the meadows beside the water.

If you are tired out after the hike, there is a small cableway that can take you directly from the lake back to the mountain station.

***Note, one should be cautious when crossing the lake (perfectly safe in winter, but not in late spring when you can see the lake is beginning to fill) especially on the northern side of the lake (where the deepest point is). So definitely be very cautious.***
