This hike is in your backyard if you live in Stellenbosch. At the top you are treated with stunning views of the surrounding areas which include views of Table Mountain, Helderberg, False Bay, Stellenbosch and the Jonkershoek valley.. This is a great alternative full-moon/sunset hike as it is free and easy to access and not as over-crowded as the more popular Lion's Head hike.

The hike starts at an elevation of approximately 140m. The total distance to the top and back varies but is round about 11.5km with an elevation gain and loss of 1070m.

The hike can start at numerous points that access the paths and roads at Coetzenburg Mountain. The more conventional starting point is at the Danie Craven Stadium as there is parking nearby. The hike takes you up on a gravel road past the Coetzenburg dam. Continue hiking up past the big wooden cross and stick to the gravel road. The road eventually turns left as you get closer to the smaller foot path. The foot path is easy to see and follow and take you up the mountain.

At some point the path is not clearly marked and it is easy to loose the trail. The best strategy is just to continue hiking up. The closer you get to the top - the path ceases to exist. Once again - continue going up. It is also easier to stick to the right of the mountain when going up.

The hike itself is not technical at all but strenuous due to the incline and elevation gain. There is no water on the way so be prepared and take additional water supplies.

You can hike to the top and back as a day hike with a small backpack or take a bigger backpack and camp at the top for the evening. With a bigger backpack the hike to the top alone should take fit individuals around 3-4 hours with minimal rest stops in between. It is important to note that the wind picks up during the night and temperatures drop quite a bit. So be sure to take enough warm clothes with if you are planning to overnight at the top.
