Description

This is one of my favorite hikes in Montana; it's relatively easy and it's absolutely beautiful. Follow the trail for roughly 1-2 hours and find yourself at the largest alpine lake in the western Montana portion of the Bitterroot Mountains.

After leaving the parking lot/trailhead at 4,665 feet, hikers follow a rocky and (quite steep in certain spots) trail surrounded by blooming wildflowers that also parallels the South Fork of Trout Creek to the lake itself; which is situated in a cirque basin setting below a spectacular view of the Divide (Montana/Idaho border). Many backpackers describe this trail as a model mountain trek; as there are many great spots to camp at the lake itself.
