About Fish Creek Campground
Overview
Fish Creek Campground is the second largest campground in Glacier National Park, and one of four campgrounds that takes reservations. Glacier National Park, in northwestern Montana, is comprised of pristine forests, alpine meadows, rugged mountains and spectacular lakes. With over 700 miles of trails, Glacier is a hiker's paradise for visitors seeking wilderness and solitude. It also provides countless scenic vistas for those wishing to relax and take in its nautural beauty. The campground is located on the western side of the park at an elevation of nearly 3,500 feet; this area of the park generally receives the most rainfall. Daytime temperatures can exceed 90 degrees, although it is frequently 10 to 15 degrees cooler at higher elevations. Weather in the mountains can be varied, including snow in summer; visitors should come prepared for anything.Recreation
This facility is conveniently located in the western part of the park, nearby many day hikes, including Rocky Point Trail, which wanders through a burn area from a 2003 wildfire. Explorers of all ages can attend nightly ranger programs at an amphitheater within the facility.Facilities
The campground is large with 178 campsites. The sites are relatively spread apart and provide privacy for both RV and tent campers. Potable water is accessible in the campground, and restroom facilities have flush toilets and sinks with running water.Natural Features
Fish Creek is heavily forested with plenty of shade. Some sites have views of Lake McDonald. The park is named for its prominent glacier-carved terrain and remnant glaciers descended from the ice ages almost 10,000 years ago. Its diverse habitats are home to nearly 70 species of mammals including the grizzly bear, wolverine, gray wolf and lynx. Over 270 species of birds visit or reside in the park, including such varied species as harlequin ducks, dippers and golden eagles.Nearby Attractions
One must-see attraction is Waterton Lakes National Park, Glacier's sister park across the Canadian-U.S. border. As the other half of Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, Waterton Lakes offers great hiking, scenic boat cruises and several scenic drives all centered around the townsite of Waterton.Waterton Lakes National Park
Fish Creek Campground Reviews
This is one of my favorite campgrounds! They have free showers, right next to the water and super close to Lake McDonald to do boating excursions. Reservations are a bit hard to get so be patient; it’s totally worth it.

Apgar Beach at Lake McDonald
West Glacier, Montana
5.0
Lake McDonald doesn't offer the close-up views of glaciers and mountains like some of the other spots in Glacier NP, but it does offer sweeping views of park's west side. The most popular spot to photograph this grand perspective is along the southwest beach and dock.
The dock makes the most interesting subject, but after parking walk along the shore and look for interesting rocks or boats ...
Kayak Lake McDonald
West Glacier, Montana
5.0
Rent kayaks at the shore of Lake McDonald and take them out for the day. Make sure to start early to get a full day in and leave yourself enough time to stop for lunch. There are multiple places to pull off and bring your kayaks onto the shore and do some small hikes. The views are spectacular from every angle.
Swim at the Belton Bridge
West Glacier, Montana
2.0
The Belton Bridge is the old entrance to glacier. You can get there by turning right down old river bridge road, which is the first right when you turn in to the West Glacier village. There are some 5-8 ft rocks to jump off, but be sure to check the water below them first. The water is gorgeous, but it is cold! Even during the warm summer months it will take the breath right out of you. Have fu...

7.23 mi
/ 1890 ft gain
Precursor: I completed this hike in November, hence the snow in the photos. Due to a lack of tree coverage, this hike is best suited for a cool summer day, or in the late spring and early autumn. It is doable in the heat of the summer, but be sure to pack plenty of water.
This hike begins by trekking through a recovering forest, which was originally destroyed in the 2003 Roberts Fire. The firs...
Hike to Howe Lake
West Glacier, Montana
4 mi
/ 240 ft gain
The hike begins along the Inner North Fork road across from a small parking area. The trail meanders up a slight incline most of the way through areas of a recent fire, as well as some areas with spectacular wildflowers when it gets a bit more lush. Around 1.7 miles in you will go up a relatively steep ridge and once your on top you will be able to see Howe lake. The trail goes straight down to...

It's a 1600 ft slow increase in elevation. You can walk around the loose rocks going around the lake for an additional 2 miles of hiking.
There is a back-country campground at the base of the glacier-fed lake and an amazing waterfall at the opposite end of the of the campground.
To camp overnight in Glacier National Park, you're required to have a backcountry permit. Get the latest informatio...
