Activites and Relaxing at Kanawa Island

Komodo, Indonesia

Description

Added by Amber Clifton

A remote island with a comfy and affordable resort, surrounded by nature. Wake up on the beach, swim, hike, paddle, eat, sleep, repeat.

Kanawa Island is only reachable via boat. You can charter a personal boat in Labuan Bajo or go to Kanawa Island Resort's office to catch their daily commute out to the island.(http://kanawaislandresort.com/how-to-get-there)

If you take their daily commute - you'll be spending the night on the island as it only makes 1 trip out and in per day. Where as if you charter your own boat - you will be able to return to Labuan Bajo the same day.

Staying the night on Kanawa is pretty great though - be sure to make a reservation! They offer beachside bale's or platforms. These are mattresses enclosed by bamboo curtains and mosquito nets. A nice way to enjoy the peacefulness of the island. Or you can rent a larger bungalow with a private bathroom and deck.

They have a restaurant / bar on the island. While it is there, I wouldn't rely on it to have everything you want. So if you have special food needs / allergies / cravings, I would suggest bringing your own snacks to subdue your needs on the remote island.

Once you've reached the island - it's time to explore!

Start with a nice hour long paddle around the island and check out all the beautiful reefs under the water. You'll see all sorts of sea life here in the crystal blue sea.

Return to land and hike up to the top of the island. There is trodden path through the bungalows, past the staff housing, and up the hill. It is steep, but there are several resting / view points on the way up. Once you reach the top, you have panoramic views of Komodo International Park and Kanawa Island. Walk along the crest for a beautiful stroll. Descending on the opposite side of the island to get to the lesser used beach is also a joy. You can walk back around the edge of the island to return to the resort. However, definitely be up top for the sunset with a couple of cold beers & and enjoy the show!

When the tide is in, make sure you get out there and snorkel! If you've never been to Komodo before - you're sure to be stunned by the beautiful fish and corals Kanawa has to offer. You'll spend all day staring in the water - but don't forget to lather up on the sunscreen - that equatorial sun is strong! Remember to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before immersing yourself in the water so that it's effective and doesn't just rinse off and pollute the water

There is also a volley ball net in the sand if you feel like getting a good work out before going for a refreshing swim. They also have a dive shop on the island for those wishing to indulge. Here you can also rent snorkel gear for your time on the island.
