Volcanic rock formations above crystal waters

At the southwest end of Milos island lies an extraordinary beach named Kleftiko. Kleftiko is by no means a beach in its typical definition but a unique landscape formed by a cluster of volcanic rocks standing above turquoise waters.

Kleftiko owes its name to the pirates that were using it as a place to hide (kleftis in greek means thief). It is quite hard to approach it by land - there is only a very rough trail that is generally avoided, needs a guide and is considered by many as dangerous because of the presence of poisonous snakes (vipers). As such, the main way to visit it is through the sea by means of sail boats, catamarans or speed boats. You can easily find such an excursion or rental boat at the main port of Milos island, Adamas.

As it is a really famous and well-known place, hundreds of visitors arrive every day through the aforementioned day trips. Typically larger boats approach the place to a certain distance and then smaller inflatable boats take people near the beach, through the caves and finally provide an opportunity to swim in the turquoise waters.

I believe that the best way to enjoy this majestic place is to sail there with your own sail boat. If you are familiar with sailing, you may rent a sailing boat with your friends or hire a skipper with a sailing boat. The best time to arrive to Kleftiko is in the afternoon when most tourists will be gone and the setting sun will make the unique landscape even more wonderful. Then you may stay the night there and enjoy the most unique experience. You will wake up in a dreamy environment and have a morning swim before anyone else arrives and eventually sail away when the hordes of tourists come again.
