Grainau, Germany

Description

Highest mountain in Germany [2962 m.]Beautiful landscapeCross a ravine and a glacierAmazing viewGreat ferratas

The ascent of Hammerbach through Höllental (English translation: Hell's Valley) is one of the classics and perhaps the most beautiful and exciting alpine tour in the area.

Start at Hammersbach in Garmisch-Partenkirchen at 760 m and follow the well marked trail towards the Höllentalklamm. There are some incredible waterfalls and peacueful forest along this part of the hike. Continuing on to the beautiful Höllentalangerhütte, a small mountain lodge with snacks, drinks, and incredible views. Up to this point, the hike is appropriate for all ages and skill levels.Continuing on to the summit, you have to cross the "Brett" and the "Leiter" (via ferratas: steel cables/steps to assist climbing) and also a small glacier called Höllentalferner. This section and beyond is more suited for those with more hiking experiece as it can be slightly technical and is a long climb.

After a last Ferrata, enjoy the fresh air at the top of Germany where you will have an amazing view of the small mountain lake, Eibsee, below.

All in all you have to go 2200 meters up in 7-9 hours only for the climb.
