Alps on Alps on Alps - Zugspitze Adventures

Grainau, Germany

Description

Added by Lachie Zettl

Feeling on top of the world overlooking the German, Austrian and Italian Alps!

The day that I visited the Zugspitze was one of those days that you know you will never forget. Our day started by visiting an old Cathedral in the town of Weis where I could see the German Alps from a distance and was already in complete awe of what I was seeing! Little did I know, fast forward a few hours and I would be standing at the top of the highest peak in Germany admiring the German, Austrian and Italian Alps!

My Cousin who was our tour guide did not give much away in regards to the plan of the day, and in hindsight I am glad that it was surprise. After following the directions of our resident local we arrived in the car park of what appeared to be a ski resort; at this point we were right at the foot of the rock monolith that they call the Zugspitze.

After purchasing a train ticket we boarded the old carriage and slowly started to ascend the mountain. After only five minutes we had an amazing view of the lake adjacent to the car park that we had just been in. As we continued our ride, we slowly climbed higher and higher up the mountain face and consequently the view became better and better. Ten minutes later we arrived at our train station where we walked out onto the ski slopes and looked out towards the horizon where the snow capped mountains seemed to go on forever! I had never seen a view like this and was like a kid in a candy store!

I would have stayed there all day, camera in hand capturing image upon image, but once again our tour guide had more to offer than this... We walked through the resort and came out at a Cable Car station which led to the peak. Once again we boarded a carriage and continued to ascend the mountain; this time to the very top.

What I saw next made my previous view from the resort seem so insignificant. There I was standing 2,962 metres above sea level at the highest point in Germany, overlooking the Alps of three different countries was a moment I will cherish forever. I did not let the -5 degrees Celsius temperature stop me from making the most of this incredible sight.  Watching the sunset from what seemed to be the top of the world; lighting up the multiple peaks with its rays was a photographer’s dream. Clear blue skies towards the east lighting up each and every detail on the mountains and as I turned to the west there was a layer of cloud covering the Alps, apart from a narrow strip of clear sky, allowing the last rays of sun to project its yellow colour across the peaks on the horizon.

Although photos do not do it justice I will let them do the talking for me! I would definitely recommend that you go and have a look for yourself if you ever find yourself nearby.
