Hike & Photograph Roxborough State Park
Littleton, Colorado
Description

Plenty of pleasant trails in the park with excellent views of the red rock formations.Family friendlyOpen year roundClose to Denver
Roxborough State Park is one of the closest state parks to the Denver metro area which makes it the perfect place to visit for those wanting to experience Colorado's beauty without subjecting themselves to lengthy drive times.
The park is open year round, so no matter the season, visitors can take in all of Roxborough's spectacular geological formations. These formations make Roxborough a photographer's dream as they make excellent subjects, especially in the winter when there's a fresh dusting of snow.
Hikers will also be treated to miles of trails of various skill levels, so whether you want to take an easy stroll through through the formations or challenge yourself by bagging Carpenter Peak, Roxborough has it all. This is one of first places I take out-of-state visitors when I want to show them what Colorado is like. If you go, I recommend doing either the South Rim Trail or the Fountain Valley Trail (or both!) as these have the best views of the rock formations.
The park is very popular on the weekends, especially in the summer, so make sure to get there early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid lines at the entrance gate. There is only one parking area in the park, so when it fills up, the rangers restrict cars to one-out-one-in. Wait times generally don't exceed 20-30 minutes, but who likes waiting in line?
Since this is a state park, there are a few things that visitors should know before coming:
- Rock climbing, mountain biking, and horse riding are all prohibited in the park.
- Pets are not allowed in the park, so be sure to leave Fido at home.
- Hikers must stay on the trail and should be aware of rattlesnakes and poison ivy at all times.
- Park hours vary, but generally trails are open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the summer and 8 a.m. to 5 in the winter.
- The park entrance fee is $7 per vehicle, make sure you have cash on hand.

Hike & Photograph Roxborough State Park Reviews
This is a great fall photography spot close to Denver; tt usually peaks in mid-October for colors. I really like the trails here and it's somewhat close to home, but I don't visit that often because it's not dog-friendly.
