Watch the sun touch the horizon beyond Little Pic River as the wind blows off the lake. Sand, driftwood and the wide open lake horizon.
On the Ontario Parks website, Neys is described as one of the finest sand beaches on the north shore of Lake Superior, with Pic Island as it was immortalized by Lawren Harris of the Group of Seven, sub-Arctic plants, forest trails and pristine shoreline. That pretty much says it all. If you're driving through northwestern Ontario, Neys should be a stopping point. Spend a night on the lake. You won't regret it.
You can make a reservation on Ontario Parks Reservation Service, or call ahead of time to see if there are sites available. It's not the busiest provincial park but it's worth being relatively sure you've got a campsite because there aren't any alternatives nearby. Campsite areas 1, 2 and 3 all have sites right along the beach. I recommend getting a site as close to the water as you can. They're all still in the forest, but a short walk to the shoreline and the breeze off the lake make it worth it.
Set up camp, enjoy some afternoon swimming in the waves if it's warm enough. There's hikes in the forest and historical context about the park's history as a prisoner of war camp during WWII. When the sun starts to get low, head to the beach to appreciate the wildness of the lake and the tranquility of a summer sunset. Then head back to the shelter of the trees for a fire and everything that Ontario camping has to offer.
Make sure you buy local firewood in order to avoid transporting invasive species.
