With easy access and an extensive network of trails, some very scenic, Wolf Creek Campground is an excellent destination for hikers throughout the year.
The main trail, called Taga shro, leads to a viewing deck looking over the Yukon River and is 1 mile long return. It is almost level, with a wide surface of fine gravel. There are interpretive signs and benches so is particularly fine as a family outing. Except in wet weather, it is a wheelchair-friendly route.
The Tagaya loop is 1.5 miles long, and wanders along the escarpment, and through the boreal forest. It is much narrower, and there are many small ups and downs.
The escarpment trail, Dthel khiy, is officially 0.4 miles long but informally continues for a couple of miles beyond that, down to the Yukon River. The trail begins with a steep set of stairs with 26 steps.
Between and beyond those three main trails there is an extensive network of trails that totals many miles.
Even on the busiest summer days, a hiker can expect to meet few people, and in the off seasons, you may hike for an hour and meet nobody. It is particularly popular with dog walkers, and mountain bikes may be seen away from the main trail.
In the winter, the main trails are soon packed down after a snowfall, so regular hiking boots are fine.
The campground is one of the most popular in the Yukon during the summer - half the sites can be reserved, the other half are for drop-ins.
