Description

Smoke Lake in Algonquin Provincial Park is an incredible place to begin a portage camping trip. You can do anything from day trips to week-long excursions if you feel so inclined.  With campsites located all over the interior of the park, it is not hard to find a place to rest up after a long day of canoeing/hiking.

Interior Campsites must be reserved online at https://reservations.ontariopa...

Reserve Big Porcupine Lake (or other campsites) for your desired number of nights. Park your car by the Portage Store at Canoe Lake to pick up your permit. Take your canoe  or kayak across the street to the Smoke Lake access point where you can launch your canoe or kayak. Smoke lake takes between 1-2 hours of paddling depending on your effort and skill level, but it is a beautiful ride (weather permitting). This will bring you to a short, 290 meter portage which exits onto Ragged Lake. Canoe through Ragged Lake to get to a more difficult 590 meter portage that shoots you out into Big Porcupine Lake. There are apprx. 15 different campsites on the lake, some that are very secluded, and some that are very open with cliffs for jumping off of.  The whole trip is beautiful, and getting to Big Porcupine Lake can take between 2-5 hours if you go there directly, depending on factors such as speed, skill, weather, etc. Make sure to give yourself enough time before sundown to find a spot to set up camp, because I can tell you from experience that looking for a campsite is not fun when you're canoeing in the dark.

Get out there and enjoy Big Porcupine Lake!

(Don't forget to hang your food)
