Description

This hiking area takes you through some of the most spectacular country on the famous Alaska Highway route. The variety of trails offer a route for any level of adventurer. Pristine blue lakes, clear pot hole streams to swim in, and panoramic vistas. Located 90 minutes west of Fort Nelson, BC, at mile 300 on the Alaska Highway, it is the nearest town to grab a great cup coffee and resupply if needed.

Stone Mountain Provincial Park is absolutely a Northern British Columbia gem. There are few places that offer the extensive trail network, in a small park, with the quality of this location.

Starting at three different trails head located at Summit Lake Provincial campground, they take you from 2000 feet, up 6200 at the highest peak. You will walk through alpine meadows, stone mountain peaks, and blue crystal clear mountain streams. All routes are well marked and easy to navigate.

Two of the routes use the same trail head, Flowering Springs and Summit Tower, they split a few miles into the trek. Both of these offer beautiful vistas the entire way and great views of the Alaska Highway in the valley below. It will take most of the day to hike in and out, each being around 7-8 miles round trip. Depending on how much extra exploring you decide to do it can vary in time. I've done both routes in under 6 hours and at a more casual pace, it took 10-12 hours. They also both offer great tenting spots throughout the alpine meadows and plateaus. The gradual elevation gain of up 2000 feet makes both routes great for all experience levels.

Summit peak being the third route located at the campground, is the most challenging to complete. It takes you from 1200m up too 2400m at its peak. I do this route as personal fitness test, and takes at most 4 hours to reach the summit and get back down with minimal stop time, but its best enjoyed stopping often and taking in the crisp mountain air.

On all of the routes you have the chance to see, the elusive mountain caribou, moose, migratory birds and hopefully at a distance, bears.

All routes can be done in a full day or pack in spend the night under the northern stars and walk out the next day. It is an unreal place for adventurers looking for variety, all with in close distance.
