No other trail provides as much scenery, wildflowers and wildlife as the Mount Washburn Trail. From the summit you will experience panoramic views of Yellowstone National Park and the surrounding mountain ranges.
Mount Washburn is located in north central Yellowstone with a peak elevation of 10,243 feet. The Mount Washburn trail can be accessed from two different locations, Dunraven Pass and Chittenden Road. The southern trailhead, Dunraven Pass, is located about 5 miles north on the Grand Loop Road heading toward Tower Fall from Canyon Village. The trailhead is located on the right. The northern trailhead starts at the Chittenden Road parking area. The trails were originally stagecoach and wagon roads so the trail is wide and easy to hike in the summer. During the snow months and into June most of the upper trail is snow covered making the trail a little more difficult. Yaktrax are highly recommended! The Chittenden Rd trail is closed during spring and normally opens in late June. (My pictures are from the first week of June on the trail from Dunraven Pass)
Atop the summit is the primary fire lookout station in Yellowstone. It is open to the public so make sure you go in and sign the visitor book and enjoy shelter from mountain weather if you get caught in a storm.
July and August offer the best views with mountain wildflowers, wildlife, and the best panoramic views of the park.
