This hike is relatively easy but far enough out of the way to make you feel isolated from the world.

The trail to Dad’s Lake is an easy 6 mile hike that can be done in one day or two. There are many lakes in the area as well that can be explored, but I will only be highlighting Dad’s Lake.

Beginning at the Big Sandy Trailhead, you will start up the trail. The beginning of the trail has bathrooms, and there is a river to filter any water you may need. The trail does not gain a ton of elevation at the beginning, so it will be easy going for the first couple miles. About 0.7 miles up the trail, there will be a junction that will lead to either Dad’s Lake or Big Sandy Lake. Take the higher trail up to head to Dad’s Lake.

You will gain about 100 ft over the next mile following the junction. At 1.8 miles, you will see a lake named Meeks Lake, which can be a good option to filter water if needed as well. At almost exactly mile 2, you will come upon a fork in the trail. Make sure to take the left trail towards a little stream.

Almost all of the rest of the elevation you will gain will be in the mile following the stream. Between mile 2 and 3 you will gain 400 feet in switchbacks going up a ridge. This is the most strenuous section of the trail. Once you gain the elevation, the trail is pretty much flat for the last 3 miles. You hit mile 4 once you come upon the meadow. There is a giant boulder on the right side of the trail that is great for a snack break or lunch.

The last 3 miles are very straightforward. There is one river crossing that is passable using the rocks protruding out of the water. Right before Dad’s Lake, you will begin a downhill, and the trail will split going uphill towards Donald’s Lake. There is a sign there and at this point you will be able to see Dad’s Lake. Continue down the hill and you will arrive.

NOTE: If you choose to camp, there is good camping all around the lake, but the best camping is found immediately to the left of the bottom of the hill. You will see another hill, and just over that ridge are a lot of great camping sights. The fishing at this lake is also excellent, and I have never had trouble catching using a GOLD spinner fishing lure.
