Snow defines winter, and the powder at this hike in the winter can have you running over as reason enough. But somehow, it only gets better when birds fly over to be friends and the lake is so blue you get lost in it.

We started the drive over to the hike at 4am. Every time we try doing a sunrise hike, we manage to find a way to go wrong by driving over to the wrong trail. Make sure you follow the coordinates, which are 47.4454, -121.4235. Or easier, just take exit 52. It is at the West Summit of Snoqualmie Pass. When we arrived, we began the short (6 mile roundtrip) hike towards the lookout. You can hike down to the lake as well, which makes the entire trip to be 8 miles roundtrip, which many people do.The sun began to rise at about 7:20 am, which we got to experience well into our hike. On the way up, there are 5 small creeks you have to pass. Because it is winter, the rocks are very slippery, so make sure you are wearing hiking boots. The entire hike is covered in the most incredible sheet of powder, and what makes it more mesmerizing are the birds that welcome you in. You first see them at the start of the trail, but they do hop along with you for the entirety of the trail. These birds will fly to you with or without food. If you do want to take a shot with the birds, do not bring any foods that will negatively impact them. This is a very short, easy hike to do and is actually the second most popular trail in Washington. A great trail to go on with a friend, family, kids, and all.
