Hike Up to Winchester Mountain Fire Lookout

This has to be one of my favorite trails in the North Cascades area. The whole trail does not take too long, unless you're like me and have to stop for photos along the journey (tip: go here in the fall for amazing colors).

The road to access the Twin Lakes parking lot is rather bumpy, so 4-wheel drive and a high clearance vehicle is definitely recommended. You are able to camp down below in the sites around the lakes, or the fire lookout is available for overnight stays on a first-come first-serve basis. You will find the Winchester Mountain Trail between the two lakes.

The beginning of the hike gets your lungs working and your heart pumping as you begin the climb, but offers scenic views the entire way up. The elevation gain is gradual making this trek doable for any skill level- families included! There are a number of areas to stray away from the main trail for photos, but you will find the grandest of views at the top featuring the historic fire lookout and Mount Baker out in the distance. 

Be sure to pack some hot chocolate or cider to enjoy in the fire lookout and don't forget to put your name down in the visitor log! If you hope to stay the night here, arrive early to claim your area (and be open to sharing the space with others)!
