This hike is about a 30 minute drive from Roanoke, VA and is a nice hike to get in for the day if you need a few hours of fresh air and nature.
Parking You can find a lot of gravel off the road when you arrive where the trailhead is. Parking is free and is limited, so be aware of that if you go during a prime season and prime hours.
Hike This hike is approximately 3-4 hours and after entering the trailhead, the hike upward begins almost immediately. (*Disclosure: I began this hike at around 4:30am in September, so it was almost pitch black outside; this may skew some details from the beginning of the hike.) Following the trail at an incline almost the entire way up, there wasn't much scrambling, but enough to keep your eye on the ground at times. There are also campsites along the way and a few viewpoints where you can stop to rest and enjoy the scenery.
Once you near the top of the hike, it get's pretty steep, but you're so close! You will know when you've arrived to your destination because the distinct "dragon's tooth" is right in front of you. Now, you have to climb up this rock if you want the optimal view of the mountains and the horizon because the wow-factor may not be achieved from the bottom of the rocks.
I would definitely suggest completing this hike for the sunrise because sitting on top of the tooth and watching the sun come up and seeing the light just spread across the trees and mountains is breathtaking. For my fellow photographers both amateur and professional, it also makes for great photos and I'm sure time lapses.
*This hike can definitely be done in the winter, but I would just be wary of any ice and snow when climbing the rocks if you do plan to do this hike during the winter months.
