Looking for that sweet spot where you can catch a sunrise without leaving your tent? This is a short hike, just 30 minutes from Charlottesville, with the most spectacular hidden camp site.

Start at the humpback rocks parking area. Facing the sign to humpback, turn left and you will find the AT after ~.1 mile. Turn left (going north) on the AT and hike for about a mile at which point you'll see a blue blazed side trail to the right. Walk down this ~.2 miles to a beautiful camp site on the bluff with a clear view into the valley. There is a stone fire ring left behind by past hikers and room enough easily for 4-5 tents. I have now camped here 5-6 times over the past summer and never met a soul at this spot.

The reason I love it so much? See tent view above. If you're lucky, you'll wake to the mist rising from the valley in the morning and a breathtaking sunrise. If you look to the right from the rock, you can see headlamps of hikers ascending humpback to catch the sunrise. There is not water at this site although you can continue north on the AT to the nearest shelter to a spring. I have just brought extra water with me the last few times I went as the hike to the spring is downhill for a couple miles. Watch out for bears! I always hang a bear bag in a tree away from the site. This summer I saw 2-3 bears every time I went out there.

*Note: The Dobie Mountain Trail is currently under construction so return up the path you came down.
