This was an awesome and simple adventure that allowed my father and I to drive from Michigan to Virginia (10 hours of driving each way) in the short period of four days we had to explore this weekend! In such a short jaunt we got to see down low, and up high, a real treat.
We experienced the Humpback Rocks, roughly 8 miles of the Appalachian Trail via the old turnpike with an estimated 1400 feet of elevation change, 3-4 miles of the Jack Albright Loop, a 1964 plane crash on Dobie Mountain, a beautiful night on the Glass Hollow Overlook, and an incredible stop on the last night at the last shelter before Rockfish Gap down in the valley along a scenic river. To top the trip off we took off mid-day Saturday and drove south down the Blue Ridge Parkway and stopped along a few sites, such as the old logging railroads with waterfalls.
