Enjoying Sunrise at Mesa Arch

Mesa Arch is one of Canyonlands National Park's star attractions. Located in the Island in the Sky District, the arch is relatively easy to get to from Moab. The arch itself is much smaller to what is around Arches National Park, but its location makes it a worldwide phenomenon at sunrise.

During peak season (summer, weekends) it's recommended to arrive at Mesa Arch 1 hour before sunrise. That means a 4AM wake up call and a little bit of hiking in the dark. The trail to Mesa Arch is very easy to follow though. It's hard to get lost even in the darkness. Once you're there, you'll be greeted with professional photographers with their very fancy equipment. (There can be as many as 40 photographers there!). There was some chitter chatter but mostly just tired looking souls waiting for sunrise.

About 20 minutes before sunrise, the crowd really kicks in. From young teens looking for a breakfast picnic to larger families with their iPhones, the crowd filled in fast around the small arch. When the sun comes around from behind the arch, you'll hear quick camera clicks as everyone scrambles to get their shot. Don't be intimidated by the professional cameras around you. Mesa Arch looks great even on Snapchat (and without any technology at all).

Some tips:

• Don't stay in the same spot. There are many good angles to catch the sun's rays off Mesa Arch. It's also inconsiderate for the other visitors trying to get their shot.
• Unless you have really nice equipment, it's going to be tough to shoot directly  the sun. Try going at an angle for softer lighting.
• Stay a while. The place completely empties out 30 minutes after sunrise and you'll have the place to yourself to eat breakfast, take a nap, or enjoy the solitude.
