Canyoneer in the Kolob Canyons

Note: HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIRING A GUIDED TOUR. Can be done without a guide, but extensive training is NECESSARY. Do not attempt without proper skill set, equipment (helmet, climbing harness, braking system, ropes, etc.), and confidence. Permits also required if attempting without a guide.

Take a short drive from the Southern Entrance to Zion National Park and you'll find the Kolob Canyon, which offers some of the best canyoneering in the world. (canyoneering= the "art" of descending a canyon through a series of rappels and free climbs). Your guide will lead you off the beaten trails and up a series of easy scrambles and minor assisted climbs until you reach the top of the canyon. Once at the top, you will be given a comprehensive overview of rappelling safety, technique, and protocol. After this, the real fun can begin. Depending on which "run" your guide takes you on, you will embark on a descent of anywhere from 4-6 rappels, each lasting anywhere from 20 to 120 feet in length. You can take it as fast or as slow as you like, admiring the beautiful red rocks, fresh air, and pure adrenaline that accompanies hanging thirty feet from the canyon floor. These rappels, while intimidating, are very safe, and each individual is briefed on the safety measures in use before the adventure begins. After your rappels, you may be forced to squeeze your way through a crevasse or two until you eventually reach the trail you started from.
