Description

A perfectly heated natural hot springs 35 minutes from Salt Lake City, Utah — free, public, open year-round, and one of the least smelly hot springs in the state. Best visited in winter when steam rises off the water.

Saratoga Hot Springs is a natural, geothermally heated pool located on the northwest shore of Utah Lake, about 35 minutes south of Salt Lake City. It's free, publicly accessible, and one of the few hot springs in Utah that doesn't have a strong sulfur smell — which makes it a popular spot for first-timers and regulars alike.

What to Expect

The water temperature is consistently warm — hot enough to feel amazing but not scalding. The pool is large enough for a small group comfortably. Compared to most Utah hot springs, it's relatively easy to access: a flat 10-minute walk from the parking lot, past the bathrooms, to the pool on the left. You'll know you're close when you see the steam.

This is an awesome place to take a date, recover after a long day of hiking, or just decompress. Weekdays are usually quiet. Weekends — especially in winter — can get crowded. Get there early if you're going on a Saturday.

Practical Info

  • Hours: Open 6am–10pm daily. Police enforce the closure — don't push it.
  • Cost: Free and open to the public.
  • Dogs: Dog-friendly.
  • Parking: Easy, free parking lot right at the trailhead.
  • Distance from Salt Lake City: ~35 minutes (take I-15 south to Saratoga Springs).

What to Bring

  • Swimsuit and towel
  • Tarp or waterproof bag (the ground gets very muddy)
  • Warm layers for getting out — especially critical in winter
  • Water and snacks
  • Camera

Tips

Bring a tarp or a large bag to lay your stuff on — the ground around the springs gets very muddy. In winter, bring a backpack to keep your dry clothes and towel in so they don't get wet or cold. The change between the cold air and warm water is part of the experience, but having warm layers to throw on right after is a must.

You can catch a great sunset from the springs if you time it right. The views across Utah Lake are worth lingering for.

GPS brought us to a community pool just down the road so pay attention to the directions in the comments. We stopped here on a road trip. It was a perfect quick little adventure along the way. Made a day of driving much more fun! Short walk and a cool spot right off the highway.
