Hiking The Subway from the Bottom Up

The first hurdle to tackle in this 9.5-mile, out-and-back hike to Zion National Park's little-seen eastern side is obtaining a permit. Reserve in advance, apply for a last-minute lottery chance, or wait it out and hope for a cancellation. We took our chances and snagged a lottery spot.

With permit in hand, drive east of Zion to Virgin, UT and take Kolob Terrace Road to the clearly marked Left Fork Trailhead.

Begin the trek to The Subway following a well-established dirt trail about a half mile until it careens 400 feet into the canyon. Watch your step as you rapidly descent the rocky trail.

Next, follow a roughly-established trail that cross-crosses the stream at the bottom of the canyon for about 3 miles. There are a few boulders to scoot over and waterfalls to climb up, but most of the hike is relatively smooth. Trekking poles help steady you on on a few areas of slippery terrain.

After stepping up a giant series of red waterfalls, the mouth of The Subway emerges on your right. Follow the parentheses-shaped walls to the heart of the canyon: a series of canyon "rooms" featuring chest-high pools of stunning blue-green water.

Wade through a few of these rooms to the waterfall in the back, and you will know you have reached your destination.

Stay awhile, especially if the water is not too freezing, then simply retrace your steps back to your parking spot at the trailhead.
