Meet the trip leader in Cusco the evening before the trip for a group orientation. Drive to Piskacuchu to begin the hike along the Urubamba River, with magnificent views of snow-capped mountains, then ascend out of the valley up the Kusichaca River to camp in Huayllabamba. Trek the most challenging portion of the Inca Trail on the 13,828 ft. 'Dead Woman's Pass' up steep stone steps, through rocky terrain & a cloud forest before descending to camp in Pacaymayo. Visit the Runkurakay circular ruins and hike through the moss and fern covered high jungle to Sayacmarca and Phuyupatamarca 'Town in the Clouds' ruins where camp is set up. Take in astounding views of the Urubamba Valley and the river from the Inca ruins of Winay Wayna, meaning 'Forever Young' and named for the abundance of beautiful wild orchids. Pass through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) with breathtaking vistas of Machu Picchu and the surrounding landscape. Travel to Aguas Calientes and spend a welcome night at the Inkaterra EL Mapi Hotel (or similar) with dinner included. Enjoy a guided tour of Machu Picchu, the extraordinary "Lost City of the Incas". Ride the train back to Ollantaytambo and return to Cusco.
