Hike the Hueco Tanks Nature Trail
The nature trail is an easy trail to walk and gives you very good views of the rock formations. To see the pictographs you will have to hike up the North Mountains to get the best views. The West and East Mountains are only accessible by guided tours. During the summer and fall when there is water in the tanks many birds can be seen.Interested in bouldering? Check out this adventure.
Bouldering at Hueco Tanks State Park
Hueco Tanks is comprised of 3 mountains and 1 spur (a lateral offshoot of a mountain). North Mountain has the most dense bouldering but access requires a reservation. East and West Mountain also offer amazing climbing, but you are required to have a guide to gain entrance to those mountains.
The park is enormous and can offer an endless variety of climbing, whether you're staying for one weeken...
Hike up Alamo Mountain
There is actually not a trail. You will have to scramble up the mountain. There are good views of some very nice petroglyphs and great views of the Otero Mesa from the top.
Lazy Cow Trail
It is a fairly open trail with no shade. This trail is best hiked during the cooler part of the year. The trail is sandy with rocky spots along the way. Bikers also use this trail so be careful . The trail is ~7 miles round trip. The trail connects to other trail within the system. I have hiked this trail several times with my dogs.
Hike the Maze-Cardiac Hill trail
This hike starts just off the Tin Mines trail. It is a moderate hike and has some very good views of the Franklin Mountains and their surroundings. During the summer many beautiful wildflowers can be seen. In the spring cacti can be seen in bloom. Bikers do also use this trail so yield to them when hiking.
Hike the El Paso Tin Mine Trail
Started our hike from Chuck Heinrich park and entered the State Park. Hike along the Old Tin Mine Road to the junction of Scenic Road trail. There are many species of cacti and desert plants along the trail. Hiked up the side of the mountain to the site of the old tin mines. The climb is somewhat difficult because of loose rocks. Explored the mines with some flashlights . Very good views of t...
