Kayaking and Cliff Jumping in Urnersee

Flüelen, Switzerland

Description

Added by Steve Clark

The perfect Swiss summer activity. 90 minutes from Zurich by train, you can kayak at a relaxed pace across the beautiful Urnersee, while ramping up the energy free climbing and cliff jumping straight down into crystal clear water.

Windsurfing Urnersee, located a short walk from the Fluelen train station, rents a range of water sport equipment and also doubles as the perfect summer camp ground.

You can rent your kayak (single, double or triple), stand up paddle board or wind surfer by the hour or for the full day. Once out on the lake, it's easy cruising and the best cliffs are to the north, on the west side (i.e. just turn right and paddle in the opposite direction to the village of Fluelen).

Paddling north for around an hour, you'll soon see monstrous walls of rock shooting up from the lake. Here you can fall out of the kayak, swim up to the rock and simply start climbing (As seen when Red Bull held their cliff diving championship here in 2009).

Note: As always when jumping into unfamiliar water, be sure to assess the water below. Search the depth, look for obstructions and ask the locals. If in doubt, don't jump.

When you're exhausted from kayaking, swimming, climbing, cliff jumping, the best tip for lunch (if you didn't pack your own) is to kayak directly across the lake to the local Restaurant Seegarten. The food is fantastic and the local beers are served cold.

At the end of the day, after returning the equipment, the camp ground also has a small cafe serving simple food (try the Mac'n'Cheese!) and cold drinks. If you decide to camp there, head into town, grab some cold beers and wander back to enjoy the sunset by the lakeside.
