Stellar viewsA feeling of superiority while hiking instead of taking the tramsOtherworldly rock formationsShort distance from BarcelonaQuiet retreat from the craziness of the cityWell marked trail
After spending a few sun soaked days in Barcelona I decided it was time to head for a change of scenery. The mountain of Montserrat lies only an hour away from the Barcelona Espanya station on the R5 line. After deciding to truly ascend the mountain I set off through the town, leaving behind the tourists as they boarded their funicular for a luxurious fifteen minute trip up the mountain. Two hours and some two thousand feet later I stopped for lunch at the monastery.
Once again casting superior looks at the tourists, I began the second leg of the trail to the summit. The trails were consistently marked at regular intervals after another hour I made it to the peak of St. Jeroni. A steep drop from the observation point allows for an excellent perspective over the valley below.
From there, I descended to the funicular at the monastery and caught the next train back.
