Description

Added by Seth Berry

Take a walk along the boardwalk amongst champion trees of the largest intact expanse of old growth bottomland hardwood forest remaining in the southeastern United States.

The boardwalk trail is an easy 2.4 mile walk through a small portion of Congaree National Park. However, it is an excellent introduction to the park as it takes you deep into the swampy and cypress forest. The flat surface is accessible and provides a leisurely way to experience the Congaree wilderness. Visiting during the early mornings provides a better chance of seeing wildlife such as deer, wild pigs, owls and many other mammals and birds. During the summertime at night, the forest lights up with billions of flashing lights as the fireflies come out. Important note for daytime visitors during warmer seasons is to pay attention to the mosquito meter as the mosquitos in the park can be very extreme.

Along the boardwalk, you'll be amazed at the size of the bald cypress trees and champion loblolly trees. While walking through the park, be quiet and still from time to time as you may see wildlife camouflaged in the forest.
