The Broken Hill Trail is located in San Diego County at the Torrey Pines State Nature Reserve. The trail is an easy 3 mile hike with some amazing views of the beach. It is characterized by wind and rain sculpted cliffs with some great terrain to explore. From the 5 freeway take Del Mar Heights Road exit and head west for about 2 ½ miles. Turn left onto Torrey Pines Road and follow that road for about another 2 ½ miles until you reach Torrey Pines State Nature Reserve. From there you can either park on the side of the freeway in the designated parking spots or you can pay the 12 dollar fee and drive into the Reserve. If you decide to pay the fee, drive up the hill and park at the entrance of the trail, the parks gates close at 6 pm. The best place to park is on the side of the freeway where there is no fee to park and you can stay longer than 6PM. From the freeway parking lot you must walk up the hill to get to the start of the trail, which will add about another half mile to your hike.
Once you have reached the top of the hill you will see an open area with restrooms and beach views. There are a few trails you can take from there but look for the sign that says Broken Hill. The trail is well marked and maintained making it easy to spot. This is an easy trail that is all down hill with a few benches on the way so you can relax and enjoy the views. As you are heading down the trail you will be going through canyons with some awesome views and some cliff formations that look like no other place in San Diego. If you decide to go off trail watch your footing because the cliffs are very unstable. Once you have arrived at the base of the trail there is a staircase that will lead you to the beach. If you parked on the side of the freeway you can walk along the beach for about half a mile back to your car completing the 3 mile loop. This is a great hike if you want a get out for a few and want some breath taking views.
