Challenging but rewarding climb to one of New Zealand's lesser-known, but incredibly scenic huts in Makarora Area, Mount Aspiring National Park. 6-8 hour roundtrip.
Approximately a 6-8 hour return, this out-and-back hike rewards you with an incredible view of Mt Armstrong, Mt Brewster and surrounding Mt Aspiring National Park peaks. The trail begins in beech forest by Fantail Falls. There is an immediate river crossing before switchbacks begin. The trail ascends the tree line and follows an snow grass ridge to a 12-man hut. Bookings are not required--the hut is operated on a first-come-first-served basis and payment is by honor system at the hut. An optional side trip to the base of a nearby glacier can be attempted.
