The trailhead for this trip is just past Arthur's Pass and is on the right side of the road, where parking is available as well.
With packs on, the hike up is around 2.5-3 hours with quick elevation gain. During the winter months you will need proper gear such as crampons and ice axes in order to properly climb to your final destination (the top hut). You will come to a red hut first and can stay at this but this is only the halfway point.
Be weary of the kea birds-do NOT feed them and do not leave your packs/food around for them to rummage through, because they will. They are smart, curious, large alpine parrots and are an endangered species in New Zealand.
Once at the top hut, you can cook inside it on your stove or light a fire in the stove provided. It can get very cold at night so be prepared. Around the basin there are climbing routes (ice in the winter) that you can tackle.
The night sky from Temple Basin is unlike anything else so make sure to venture out at night. The out-house is also located separate from the hut (roughly 50 meters away).
This is a great day hike as well as a great overnight trip, it's up to you!
