Enjoy lunch in a lean-to overlooking the Catskill High Peaks at Huntersfield Mountain.
Huntersfield Mountain at 3423 feet, is the highest point in Schoharie County. The mountain is located in the southern part of the county along the border with Greene County in the 1325 acre Huntersfield State Forest.
Parking is along the seasonal road at an old gravel pit at the level ridgeline of the mountain. The trail to the summit is actually an old logging road. This road, although unmarked, is easy to follow (but may be overgrown in spots during the summer). You'll find the start of this logging road to the right of the old gravel pit. Yellow plastic DEC trail markers are seen just before you reach the lean to. A loop trail that comes from the Long Path is actually the Huntersfield Mountain Lean To Access Trail. After taking a break at the lean to, enjoying the view, make sure to continue on to the next view point located a few hundred feet ahead. This view features Ashland Pinnacle, which the Long Path travels to. To reach the USGS summit marker, continue to the former junction of the aqua blazed Long Path and turn left on the old Long Path. The marker is a short distance away. At this point you can retrace your steps.
