Hike through Kaaterskill National Forest and the Catskill Mountains to New York's tallest waterfall, Kaaterskill Falls, at 231 feet.
This short hike is one of the most popular in the Catskills — and for good reason. From the Laurel House Road Trailhead, it’s less than a mile round trip to reach Kaaterskill Falls, New York’s tallest two-tiered waterfall, with a dramatic 260-foot drop into a rocky amphitheater.
The trail itself is relatively quick and beginner-friendly, with a wide, gently graded gravel path that follows Spruce Creek down to a fenced overlook at the top of the falls. If you want to get closer, a stone staircase and spur trail lead to the middle viewing platform, offering the best perspective of both tiers tumbling into the pool below.
Best times to visit:
-
Spring: Snowmelt swells Spruce Creek, and the falls thunder at full force.
-
Summer: Cooler temps near the mist of the falls make it a refreshing escape.
-
Fall: Brilliant foliage lights up the entire gorge.
-
Winter: The frozen cascade is stunning, and while ice climbing happens nearby, most visitors should stick to admiring from the designated viewpoints.
Important notes: Swimming and cliff jumping are not allowed at Kaaterskill Falls. The area has a history of accidents, so stick to marked trails and viewing platforms.
Trailhead & Parking: Park at the Laurel House Parking Lot (end of Laurel House Road, off North Lake Road). There are restrooms and kiosks with maps at the lot.
Leave No Trace: Please pack out everything you bring in — and consider carrying a small bag to help clean up what others may have left behind. With so many visitors each year, every little bit helps keep this place wild and beautiful.

Kaaterskill Falls via Laurel House Reviews
Relatively easy hike, can get crowded. Lots of rock scrambling, and you're hiking along the edge of a stream until you come to the most gorgeous falls. We went in early spring.

Obviously this is an absolutely amazing falls and I've been going my entire life. This being said it's often incredibly crowded with obnoxious city people so plan a good time to visit. Also be careful!

Great Review! I was on the Professional Trail Crew this summer and we actually worked on building a staircase to the upper part of the falls to inhibit the injuries that have been going on from people hiking up the pathless woods to the top of the falls! This will allow more access and safety to the top part of the falls when it's opened in the near-future! :)
