Hike at Clark Reservation (with caves)

Jamesville, New York

Description

Added by Fletcher Chapin

Beautiful scenic walk, with a number of different trail options. Also a nice public playground at the entrance to the state park or caves that can be explored if you're willing to go off the trail.

We began from the parking area and walked up the Mildred Faust Trail until the point where it loops back on itself. Partway through the loop there is a path off the trail (which is labeled with no trespassing signs that leads down to a beautiful cliff overlooking forest and I-481. Obviously if you're not comfortable going past the no trespassing sign then don't, the hike is still quite fun and the Cliff Trail offers a beautiful view of the glacial lake in the State Park. If you do go off the trail once you reach the cliff if you turn left and walk along the cliff you will reach a couple of cool caves which can be explored. After we climbed down to the caves we didn't really go inside because we decided it looked too dangerous for us, but it's clear some people have, as there is a rope tied at the entrance that can be used to climb deeper into the caves. After exploring the caves we went back to the Mildred Faust Trail and ended up walking over to the Cliff Trail for a nice view of the lake as I stated earlier. For trail maps there's a PDF on the Clark Reservation State Park website or an android and iPhone app that can be downloaded.
