Canoe Camping on a Private Island on Saranac Lake

Lake Clear, New York

Description

Added by Madeline Tolle

Camping on a private island in the middle of a lake in the Adirondacks - it really doesn't get much cooler than thatCanoe camping is pretty much the bestVisit in the summer for swimming, cliff jumping, and playing in the waterVisit in the fall for bright foliage as the seasons change

Definitely make sure to reserve your campsite well in advance - they get reserved quickly, and for good reason. Once you have your campsite reserved, you can park your car at the loading dock (4468 State Route 3 Saranac Lake NY 12983), pack your boats, buy firewood, and be on your way.

All campsites can only be accessed via the water. You can use a canoe, kayak, or motorboat to get to your campsite. While there are campsites along the perimeter, it's recommended to get an island spot for the full experience. The sites are all good, but campsite #28 looked particularly rad. #29-#33 are also sure bets for a good spot. All of the campsites are primitive, which means they have an outhouse, a fire pit, and nothing else. That said, they're very well maintained and clean.

During the day, you can take your boats to explore other islands on Lower Saranac Lake, or venture further to Middle and Upper Saranac Lake. There are cliff jumping spots as well as picnic areas throughout. Everything you need for a good old-fashioned lake campground.

The campsites are well spread out, so you shouldn't hear much from your neighbors, just the sound of the loons on the water. The fog in the morning is definitely worth waking up early to see.
