Hike West Rattlesnake Mountain

Sandwich, New Hampshire

Description

Added by Heidi Dallas

Distance: 1.6 milesElevation gain: 820 ftAmazing view of Lake Squam

From Holderness, NH turn onto 113. Travel down 113 towards Sandwich for just over 6 miles. You will see a turn to the right called Metcalf Drive. It is easy to spot by the countless mailboxes and very old small cemetary next to the turn. Once you've turned, there is a "blind hill" - beep before going over the hill as cars coming the opposite direction cannot see down, and there are fender-benders here quite often.

About a half mile down you will see "Lakewood Cabin" on your left. Directly across from this cabin on right right is the trailhead for Butterworth Trail. This is where you will be starting. Drive another 25 yards and you will see a parking area on your right (large enough for about 10 cars) and an access point to the lake on your left (large enough for only kayaks, SUPs, and similarly sized craft).

The hike itself is very easy to follow and extremely well marked with yellow triangle "SLA" tags (Squam Lake Association). At the summit (about .9 miles) there is an intersection with Ridge Trail. Take this another .1 miles and you will see an outcropping of rock which faces Squam Lake.
