Accessibly only by foot and then by boat (canoe in our case!), make your way up Borestone Mountain for a day-hike or weekend stay (reservations required). The rambling Adirondack style lodge is nestled between two lakes and can accommodate up to 19 people so bring the whole family or all of your friends (wedding party, anyone?). It's BYO-Everything.Play cards in front of the crackling fireplaces, cook massive meals in the industrial-scale kitchen, or just read in the rocking chair by the porch. Hike up Borestone, paddle the lakes in one of the canoes, or wander in the woods at your delight. This is friendly for all ages, shapes, and sizes.Borestone Mountain is managed by Maine Audubon. Your stay at Borestone supports the non-profit organization. A feel good vacation!Reservations Here: http://maineaudubon.org/find-us/borestone-mountain-sanctuary/lodges-reservations/

After stopping for BBQ in Monson (cash only!), make your way over the bridge (take note... epic swimming hole!) and park on the road by the Maine Audubon sign. Hike up the driveway and enjoy the stunning trails and granite steps.

Borestone Mountain has views of the Chairbacks, Moosehead lake, and other fabulous features of Central Maine. This is a great place to see fall foliage, but it's beautiful year-round. The hike is short (1-2 miles from the road, and another mile or so up the mountain, the last mile being quite steep). Kid friendly.
