Duration - a few hours at night. Amazing views of the Milky Way. Lack of crowds during Spring and Autumn months. Extremely easy to access, and no elevation gain. Almost no light pollution to disrupt your view of the night sky.

From the center of East Blue Hill, head east on Curtis Cove Rd 0.5 of a mile until you see a large curb on the right side for space to park. Find the access point, and scout an area along the rocky shore.

Maine's coastline offers some amazing views of the southern night sky because of the lack of light pollution. Luckily, that portion of the sky is filled with our inspiring galaxy, the Milky Way. Many people have only seen pictures of the Milky Way, in fact only 20% of the population has seen it with their bare eyes, but this adventure will give you a chance to see it at its best, with solitude, and on a beautiful Maine beach.

The Milky Way is visible in the southeastern sky during the spring, and slowly moves to the southwestern sky by the fall. Check out the app "Stellarium" to see where the Milky Way will be during any time of the year, to plan that perfect view even if your vacation to Maine is months away. Curtis Cove overlooks the Blue Hill Bay and Long Island, but because of the different vantage points along the beach, you can see a 180 degree view of the southern portion of the sky. Always check the weather to enhance your experience. Pick a colder night with 100% clear skies, or for a more dramatic feel, go with a partly cloudy sky.

Bring along some friends, start a small campfire, add some marshmellows, and let your eyes adjust to the dark sky to see the ever inspiring galaxy, the Milky Way.

Great little rocky beach to view the Milky Way. You will see two little posts at the beginning of the walkway down to the beach. It will be very hard to see, but trust your instincts. :)
