Visit Oak Alley Plantation

Louisiana Oak Alley Plantation

Added by

Visit the Historic Oak Alley Plantation along the mighty Mississippi River in Vacherie, Louisiana.

Take a tour of the historic grounds of Oak Alley Plantation, named for the canopy of 300 year old oak trees creating a dramatic alley over the red brick walkway leading to the large white columned home on the grounds. Walk the grounds and learn about American history then and now. The beautiful home and gardens are a photographers dream. The drive approaching the area runs along the picturesque Mississippi River and through thick Louisiana swamp land. Large oak trees draped with Spanish moss and old tin roofed southern homes line the roads. Access to the ground cost 20 dollars, which includes a tour of the interior of the beautiful home. Hike around the grounds and enjoy a picnic under the cool canopy of large oaks. The grounds also offer a bar and restaurant for an extended stay. And if you really want to make your trip "authentically Louisiana," take the Creole Paddle Boat Tour which stops at Oak Alley.

Oak Alley is easily accessed from New Orleans in the South or Baton Rouge in the North. Both drives are roughly 45 minutes long. Head North or South on Interstate 10 and take exit 194 for LA-641/LA-3213 South towards Gramercy, LA. Take this for 7 miles over the Mississippi River. Take the first exit to the right for LA-18, which is the road that runs along the Mississippi River. Follow LA-18 for 7 miles until you reach Oak Alley Plantation on your left.

How to Get There

Most wonderful!

Been several times, and I highly recommend this adventure. Here, if you give yourself enough time, you can learn about sugarcane farming, French Creole life, slavery, the US Civil War and blacksmithing. Make sure to you give yourself about 2 hours to see everything, and if you go in the morning you can finish up your tour in time to have lunch at Oak Alley Restaurant.
