A little piece of wilderness just outside NOLA

The Barataria Preserve is located just 15 miles south-west of downtown New Orleans and is just a gem.

I landed at the Preserve, which is within the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, on a whim. It was magical.

I began at the Visitor Center and explored the Visitor Center Trail, Palmetto Trail, Bayou Coquille Trail and the Marsh Overlook, a total of about 4 miles to the end and back to the parking lot. They are all flat, well kept trails, some elevated over swamp waters, some gravel.

This half-day trip was one of the most lively outdoor experiences I've ever witnessed. Everything was alive! The way the wind blew hanging lichens covering the oaks overhead to the snapping grasshoppers the size of my thumb to the fluttering birds, bumblebees and butterflies was truly awe-inspiring. Though I didn't catch a glimpse of any, gators are a common sight along with deer, fish and other wildlife.

Since I went by myself and the visitor center was closed on that day, I listed to a cell phone tour with earbuds (found on the NPS website). There were 7 or so "stops" that are labeled with placards along the trail and relate to some sort of history of factual info about the wildlife around.

The Barataria Preserve is perfect for a visitor looking to get outside or the local wanting an escape from the city for a peaceful afternoon.
