The actual Gaviota wind caves are amazing (I assume), but the wrong way is awe-inspiring with a great view. However, it is difficult, because the area is windy, and you're climbing on ledges and ridges alongside the hill
The Gaviota wind caves is a unique formation of caves that are actually carved out by the winds. Located next to the highway, you can still see it and hear it from the caves.
Starting from the entrance to the Gaviota Campground, stay right to get to the parking lot located at the top of the hill. You will see a gate and a mountain lion sign. Walk down the road for about a mile until you see a path that takes you up to the hill. This is a steep ascent, maybe at about 30 degrees with no switchbacks. When you reach the top, you still see the highway to your right and the Pacific coast to the left. At this point, the caves are to your left. HOWEVER, the wrong way is to the right.
Turn right and continue down the hill you just went up to reach a slightly shaded area. At this point, you will see some of the caves to your left and a barely discernible trail up the hill. Be careful at this point, because the ridge of the mountain is quite windy, and a safe path is difficult to find. Halfway up, there is a small windcave to the right, where 2 people can fit comfortably. From there, meander as far as you can without falling to explore the surrounding caves. The caves vary in sizes from here. At the top, you will have a view of the freeway and the first hill you climbed.
Head back down the same way you came. It might be more comfortable and secure to scoot down on your butt.
